Dear Friends                                                                                                            November 2012

The PTA of the High School of American Studies at Lehman College (PTA of HSAS) hopes the school year is progressing well for all our new and returning families. Over the last ten years, HSAS has gained a reputation throughout the country not only as an academically challenging school, but as a school that creates excitement about learning in an intimate oasis, unparalleled by any other Specialized High School in New York City.

However, many programs and enrichments are facing potential elimination.
DOE budget cuts, higher fixed expenses, and decreased funding from outside partners have reduced the available dollars in the school’s budget, despite our administration’s prudent management. How can HSAS continue to provide the services needed to create a stimulating learning environment and give our children the tools they need to succeed?

How can we help?
It is up to us, the greater PTA of HSAS, to fill in the gap by raising the necessary funds required to ensure that all integral programming will remain intact for the students of HSAS in this academic year. Please note, this is the first time the parent body is being asked to help supplement the school budget at this increased level. We are suggesting a contribution of $500 per student. However, no contribution can ever be too large or too small, and we appreciate every contribution of any amount. Please consider giving within your means; our most important goal is 100% participation**.

How will these funds be used?

  • Clubs and teams: fees, materials, and supervision
  • New student orientation
  • Graduation
  • Theatre and cultural excursions
  • Class trip chaperone expenses
  • Naviance college-bound platform
  • Planners for each student
  • NY Times subscriptions
  • Technology upgrades
  • Faculty Appreciation Lunch
  • And More…

Every aspect of the High School Of American Studies culture – from Moot Court/Mock Trial and Pestopalooza to Friday Seminar and the end-of-year picnic, is designed to support the students’ academic work while fostering an atmosphere of community. Perhaps we were attracted to this school because of the intimacy its size affords, the intellectual passion of the faculty and student body, its impressive reputation, or the abundance of enrichment opportunities it offers. We can all agree that our children are in a unique learning environment. We as parents must complete the circle.

By contributing to the Annual Appeal today, you can help ensure that the programs and enrichments that we so appreciate and upon which we rely, will remain in place this academic school year. Know that our children, the students of HSAS, will be the direct beneficiaries of your generosity.

With greatest appreciation and hopes for a safe and happy holiday season,

The PTA of HSAS

** Of note to returning parents is the elimination of the suggested contribution of PTA membership dues. Every parent is automatically a member of the PTA of HSAS.
